How to Detect and Fight Online Dating Scams

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Jason Sun Google Trends shows that online dating is getting popular. As a result, the number of romance scams as well as victims are on the rise. From my first hand experience, majority of the dating scams are from West African countries - Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, etc. This is collectively called Nigerian Romance Scams - one of the various forms of Nigerian scams. A Romance Scam normally involves these steps: Step 1: The scammer posts an attractive photo (such as attractive professional models) and fake profile on a dating website. Step 2: Mass message members with pre-written copy of message. Step 3: In the message, the scammer normally shows interests in the victim’s profile and asks if the victim wants to know more about the scammer. Most of the time an email address (Yahoo mail or Hotmail) of the scammer is included in the message. Step 4: If the scammer gets replies, he/she would make up stories and would normally claim how bad his/her current situation is and needs help to overcome it in some way. The scammer’s story could be very emotional and easily gain sympathy and affection from the victim. Step 5: The scammer gradually lures the victim away from the messaging channels provided by the dating website towards external means such as personal emails, instant messaging, telephone calls, or even webcam (this is the scary part. They will find excuses not to show their real faces but they could take photos of the victim via webcam. Sometimes they ask the victim to get naked. The scammer would later demand for money by threatening with exposure of the victim’s naked photos on internet). Step 6: No matter what the story is, after a period of establishing trust, romance, and desire, the scammer will ask for money to be sent in forms such as cash money orders, send merchandise, or currency exchange via a telegraphic money transfer service, usually Western Union or Moneygram, etc. Step 7: The scammer keeps asking for money until the victim can’t afford or the fraud is perceived. Note that the scammers steal attractive photos from other websites, so these photos have nothing to do with these scammers. The real people of these photos are also victims of romance scam. How to identify red flags in a profile or message Here is online dating scammers list on NextWink. Scam profiles or messages share characteristics that can be generalized. Here is a list that I summarized from the scam profiles and messages on my site. Scammers Profiles are made up of these attributes: - 20 to 35 years of ages - Single with no kids - Looking for long-term relationship or romance - Profession is normally student, nurse, model (or will become a model) Profiles are usually perfect in English but messages are broken.Relocation: the scammer claims she/he is travelling, working, or stuck in a foreign country and would like to come back to the country (US, Australia, etc) soon. The scammers tell you that they are having trouble to get back home or cash their paychecks.Email address is included in the message (normally Yahoo or Hotmail email address) and is very keen to talk from there rather than use the dating site’s internal messaging channels.Promise to send more photos via emails if get replies. What to do if you suspect that someone is trying to scam you? Some members on my site ask scammer questions about Australia (where she/he is living, what towns are around, Football or cricket questions, etc) and many times the scammer wouldn’t have a clue. One member asked where the scammer lived in Australia and what towns were around her. The scammer said she lived in Sydney. Her reply was “I do not go outside much, so I do not know what towns are around me”. She was clearly scamming. She could not even spell Australia right.Report your suspicion to the dating site webmaster.Join romance scams Yahoo Groups to get support and search their database for fake profile info. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/romancescams/I hope, after reading this article, you are put on alert about romance scammers in general. Educate yourself about online dating scams and help yourself to know how to prevent it from happening to you. Next time when you use an online dating service, I hope you would be able to judge by yourself the credibility of profiles and messages. SAT Test Preparation

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Joe Pagano For many juniors in high school, the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) looms as a big ugly monster on the horizon. Indeed for both parents and students, the anticipation of taking this test creates all kinds of unwelcome anxiety. The stress becomes enhanced for the competitive college-bound individual who wants to get into a better-than-average school. In order to achieve a respectable score on the SAT and to ward off excessive amounts of stress, students should give adequate time to prepare for this examination. For those parents who can afford it, private tutoring and specialized schools are also available. Most parents prefer one-on-one private tutoring to an SAT school. Parents, whose children I have tutored for this test, have told me that they opted for a private tutor after having enrolled their child in a program at school and got minimal results. Certainly some help is better than none, and this would apply to that help gained at a school or specialized preparation center. The problem with the school or group approach is that many students tune out while enrolled and therefore do not experience the gains that one-on-one help can provide. In a one-on-one situation, the student has no choice but to interact with the tutor, whereas in the group environment a student can often get lost in the shuffle. Such factors as non-participation, inattentiveness, and lack of interest will certainly mitigate against any gains in score. Of course, in the one-on-one situation, the competence of the tutor plays a significant role as well. In my years of tutoring privately for the SAT, (go here for more information SAT Test Preparation) I have found that putting the student in the test situation and then reviewing what they failed at is most effective. In other words, I let them take an actual math section test, under the same time constraints as the actual SAT, and then I go over it point by point. Then I request that they retake the entire test after reviewing my notes and worked-out solutions. After doing this repeatedly, their ability to get through the problems successfully increases dramatically. Bear in mind that while I show them the step-by-step solutions, I also fill in their weak spots by re-teaching them material they need to know. By providing this type of tutoring, the students test scores invariably go up; and both they and their parents are always pleased with this accomplishment. Warmth Stays In-Heat and Cold Stay Out With a Sunroom Enclosure

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By Andrew Caxton The outdoor experience with indoor comfort. That’s the joy of the sunroom. The addition of a sunroom to your home allows you to relax in a nice, cosy, air-conditioned room, while just a few feet away are the joys of nature. Your garden, your trees, your backyard and children playing. No need to worry about insects, no need to worry about rain or sharp winds. And at night, depending on whether or not the sunroom roof is made of glass, of course, you’ll be able to watch the stars as well. There are a range of sunroom types and designs to choose from, and since sunrooms are by no means a new invention you’ve got plenty of manufacturers to choose from who have plenty of experience in designing the most energy efficient and pleasant rooms. And because of the advances in design, it’s not possible for you to construct your sunroom all by yourself, should you be so inclined. Typically, when you think of a sunroom you think of an addition, nothing more than a place to sit and relax. But people these days are so taken with the sunroom that all kinds of rooms are now getting the treatment, from the kitchen to the bed room, and even to the bathroom. This may sound like a good idea…but kitchen units surrounded by vast amounts of glass? The glass in sunrooms are especially designed to keep sunlight and heat out and warmth in. They might not be too efficient if there’s an extra amount of heat generated from within. So if you are thinking about having a sunroom kitchen, make sure you talk to as many people as possible who have them, to see what they think. Ask them about the costs of cooling the room, the intricacies of cleaning, and so on. But a room such as a den or family room will be greatly enhanced if it is a sunroom as well. No more need to worry about rain, snow, or the blazing heat of summer. Sunroom glass will filter out the glare of the sun so you’ll be able to see quite easily although you’re surrounded by sunlight, and it will also block out dangerous UV rays. Glass of the highest quality would also seem to be “intelligent,” reflecting much of the sun’s heat so that the interior of the room remains at a nice, even temperature, without you having to pay a fortune for an air-conditioner during summer or a heater during winter. Sunrooms are extremely easy to build, and usually take no more than a couple of days to put together, depending on the type of sunroom you get, of course. Some have to be put together from scratch, others come in kits with everything made in a modular design to make them easy to put together. And while a sunroom can be expensive - from $10,000 to $70,000, depending on all the features you have, it can still be less expensive than the cost of building on a tradition “bricks and mortar” addition. Top 10 Hair Tip Checklist When Using Shampoo

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Mike Jones Why a checklist of hair tips on washing and shampooing hair? Surely it’s something most people do regularly without thinking. That may be so, but negligence or ignorance in this area of hair care can actually do damage. Make sure you observe these guidelines when choosing and using a hair shampoo: Hair Tip #1 Shampoo your hair regularly to keep the hair clean and the scalp healthy. Depending on the environment in which you live and work, even washing your hair once a day will not damage the hair as long as you use good quality mild shampoo that does not strip all of the sebum from the hair. (Sebum is the natural oil produced in the hair follicle which contains a natural antiseptic and protects the scalp from infection.) Hair Tip #2 Do not use soap on your hair. Soap is too harsh and especially when used on your hair in hard water areas it can leave a sticky residue. Experimenting with a variety of quality shampoos designed for your hair type will help you arrive at one that you are happy with and that leaves your hair clean and shiny. Hair Tip #3 Wash your hair in warm water and make sure you give time for the hair to soak thoroughly before applying the shampoo. As sebum is a natural oil it will not dissolve in cold water. Hair Tip #4 Put a dollop of shampoo in the palm of your hand relative to the length of your hair and spread it between both hands. Now spread it over your head by stroking the shampoo through your hair to ensure even coverage. Hair Tip #5 Use the balls of the fingers (not fingertips) to gently massage the scalp as you apply the hair shampoo. This gets the shampoo right into the hair root. Pay special attention to the hairline and give it a little extra time as dirt can lodge in this area. Hair Tip #6 Most times you only need to apply the shampoo once, especially if you wash your hair frequently. Unless you did not get a good lather the first time or if the hair is especially dirty should a second application of shampoo be necessary. Hair Tip #7 Be meticulous with rinsing your hair. It should be done under running water and make sure you use lots of it! Residue shampoo left in the hair can cause damage. Hair Tip #8 Dab or pat your hair with a towel to remove excess water or moisture. Do not rub with a towel to avoid damaging or breaking the hair. Remember, wet hair is fragile hair. Hair Tip #9 Using a pH balanced shampoo can help ensure you do not damage it unknowingly. A pH (potential hydrogen) balance of between 4.5 to 5.5 is a good guide indicating the shampoo is slightly acidic, matching the pH value of your hair and sebum. A shampoo with a high alkaline content, while appearing to make the hair thicker, can actually damage the surface of the hair. Hair Tip #10 Be aware of the ingredients in the shampoo you choose and examine the label carefully. Fruit additives can help hydrate the hair. Perfumed and coloured shampoos can in a few instances cause skin irritation so be prepared to try another if this happens. While you may be tempted to use a shampoo that contains proteins, and no doubt it can help the hair, if you are concerned about your hair getting enough proteins, pay more attention to your diet and feed the hair from the inside, a far more effective way to help your hair than adding proteins from the outside! Recommendation: The hair tip checklist above will do much to help you use hair shampoo effectively. Choose your hair care products wisely. On that note, a Toronto based company called Nisim International has been involved with hair science for over 20 years. They have an exceptional range of hair care products which have undergone extensive testing and research and which are very beneficial for your hair. College Cuisine

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Ron Long Going to college is a grand experience. It’s the first time many young adults get the chance to begin taking care of themselves, no matter what the consequences. One of the main things that worries parents when their child heads out into the world of college is, of course, their diet. What are they going to eat if the cafeteria closes too early? What if they don’t like the cafeteria food? What if they didn’t even sign up for cafeteria meals? Parents needn’t worry. College students today have developed their own underworld of cuisine, involving quite the array of foods, time-tested by students in the past, and catered specifically to college needs by clever manufacturers. The main staple of dorm life these days is, of course, the microwave. College students take microwave food to a whole new level. The smell of microwave popcorn is right at home in a dorm, even at 3 am. I had a roommate at college who ate microwave popcorn for breakfast. Quick, easy, cheap and filling- what more could you ask for? There is also the infamous instant Japanese noodles (the Japanese name for this product does in fact translate to “student cuisine”). One of the biggest things I learned at school was how many ways there are to eat this ubiquitous, 25 cent meal. There’s the traditional method of boiling it into soup, of course. There’s also the option of straining the water out before adding the seasoning, creating a haphazard pasta meal. A friend of mine used to give away his seasoning packets to those who liked their soup extra salty, and then use the noodles mixed with cafeteria vegetables to create his own vegetable soup. There is, in fact, an entire culture devoted to forming recipes around these instant noodles. And college students might be the most creative consumers of all. But the need for so much creativity is not as dire as it once was. Nowadays microwaves are ridiculously cheap to own, and many college students don’t think twice about having one in their dorm room. This has caused manufacturers to cater to the college students’ needs like never before. Macaroni and cheese that doesn’t involve buying milk, and rice dinners in a bag that include all the seasonings, are a huge step forward for students living at school, where access to milk and butter (and having somewhere to keep them if you buy them) is not as easy as it looks. Sure, not all of this instant and easy food is healthy. Some of it is downright bad for you. But parents needn’t worry too much. Your child might spend a few semesters believing the food groups consist of salt, fake chicken, cheese in a pouch, and potato chips… but it will make them appreciate you all the more when they come home. Relationship Advice: The Law of Connection

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Jeff Herring Spouses are either growing closer or growing apart. That’s the bottome line. You don’t get to stand still in relationships for very long. How to re-connect I’ve read a lot of either complicated or mushy stuff about how to reconnect if you have grown apart. I like practical, useable stuff, so here is a simple, practical idea: Have a conversation about when the two of you were the closest and felt the most connected. What was happening then? What were you thinking about? What were you focusing on? Amd what I think is the most powerful and useable question: When you felt the closest and most connected, what were you doing? Then make a list of the things you did when you felt the most connected. Now here’s the rocket science part - pick a few of the things you did when you were the closest, and then do them again. How to stay connected Once you get reconnected, you want to stay connected. So we need to know two things: 1. What does it take to continue to feel connected to my spouse? 2. What does it take for my spouse to continue to feel connected to me? Do regular maintenance on your relationship connection to make sure you are doing the things consistently that each of you need to stay connected. The Incredible Coleman Grill

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Angel Estrella When most campers and outdoorsmen think of how they are going to cook in the great outdoors you can bet the first thing they think of is the Coleman Grill. The Coleman Grill is one of the best known and well respected pieces of camping and outdoor cooking equipment. The Coleman name is known for quality products such as lanterns, stoves and grills. Most campers have at least three Coleman products in their camp. The camping necessities are the Coleman Grill, Coleman Lantern and the Coleman Cooler. Ask any frequent camper or weekend nature lover how they prepare their meals and ninety percent of the time theyll tell you on a Coleman Grill. The other ten percent will say they are cooking on the campfire, but if you happen to pop in on the camp, youll probably see them using a Coleman Grill! The Coleman Grill is popular for good reason, its a well made piece of equipment thats simple to use. The reliability of the Coleman grill is also legendary. Ive personally never worn out my Coleman, and Ive had it for years. Coleman Grills come with two fuel type options. Theres the classical propane fueled grill, and the newer liquid fueled grills. The tried and true propane models are very dependable in almost any type of weather. The liquid fueled Coleman Grills are more efficient in the fuel department, with a gallon of liquid fuel lasting as long as four propane filled tanks. The Coleman Grill makes use of a fuel regulator, which ensures a nice consistent performance in cooking whatever you throw at it. The fuel stays at a steady stream, which makes for even cooking whether it is in cold temperatures or in higher altitude areas. The Coleman Grill fuel regulator also keeps the fuel at a steady rate when the fuel supply is low. The Coleman Grill comes in several variations, each with its own advantages. There is also a range of accessories to enhance your Coleman Grill should you so desire. If you are the hiking type and need to carry all your equipment on your back, theres even a Coleman product thats lightweight and ideal for you. Accessories for the Coleman Grill include a griddle, toaster, broiler, fry pans and a neat little gadget called a Camp Cooker that lets you make some really nice grilled cheese sandwiches. Of course thats not a complete listing of the products you can get to go with your Coleman Grill, but it does give an idea of the Coleman Grills potential. Personally, I think everyone should own a Coleman Grill. Theyre great for backyard outings, camping trips and a life saver if the power is out for a long period. Wellness and Special Places in Nature

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Laurie Lacey In this article I will speak about the wonderful healing Potential of special places. By special places, I mean thoseplaces in nature or the natural world that are close to ourhearts, and healing to our mind, body and spirit. If you dontyet have your own special place in nature, I would recommendthat you make this a goal for the near future. I have a number of special places, and have used them for thehealing of dis-ease, for inspiration, and the gaining of newinsight into a problem, or to have a respite from the activitiesof my normal life. They are a refuge of safety, or places wherewe are able to re-orient ourselves, to think about and to determine goals for ourselves, or simply quiet sanctuaries for meditation. In our special places we are able to engage the landscapein dialogue; I mean, to get to know an area quite well. Weare able to see how its mood changes with the weather, theseasons or the time of day. Over time, we also becomeacquainted with the animals and birds that frequent our specialplace, and may even get to know their behaviour patterns, andflight paths. For me, it takes on the aura of an old friend aplace where I can take my problems, a place which givesboth support and intimacy. It is not my place to tell anyone how they should treat theirdis-ease or to recommend a treatment, nor do I advocatenature therapy (ecopsychology) practices as a substitute forprofessional medical services. However, there are times whenwe can empower ourselves to remedy situations on our own,or with the help of friends, or in conjunction with professionalservices. And, too, having special places is a good means ofillness prevention. It is an excellent process, and a free form of self-help, encouraging us to play a greater role in maintaining our health and wellness. Let me conclude this article, with a suggestion: go off into thenatural world and find an area in which you feel relaxed andcomfortable. A place where you feel safe, and are able tocontemplate life in peace. Make this place a refuge in theweeks and months, ahead. Visit your special place at least once or twice, weekly. While there, examine the area in detailnoting the bird, animal, and insect life you discover. Begin ajournal of your experiences while in this natural landscape. Have a brief period of meditation during each visit. As theweeks and months pass, you will come to realize that yourspecial place has assumed an important role in your life, andin helping to define the kind of life you live. You will also notice what a wonderful role it plays in maintaining your well-being. Having a special place in nature will help to bringyou a more joyous life. Are You Ready for a Serious Relationship? Three Questions to Ask Yourself

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Rebekah Spicer Joan had dated Bill for two years, and they had become very serious. So serious that they began talking about marriage, a family, and their future together. It was a shock when one day out of the blue, Bill announced that he was finished with their relationship and had found someone else he would rather be with. Truly, Joan had not seen this coming, and was heart-broken. She didn’t think she would ever date again. Many people suffer serious hurts in relationships, and for a time they are unable to even consider dating again. If this is you, be assured that it is good to take a short break after being in a serious relationship to allow yourself time to heal. However, eventually you will have to move past your hurt, and begin to date again. Online dating is a great, non-threatening way to begin. Read www.Christian-online-dating-guide.com for lots of tips and helpful hints. If you meet a wonderful person, you may begin to question whether it is worth the risk to enter into a serious relationship with him/her. Are you ready for another serious relationship? Here are three things to ask yourself: 1. Am I confident in who I am? Don’t let another person’s shortcomings ruin your self-image. Just because they have moved on, doesn’t necessarily mean bad things about you. Be confident in yourself, your goals, your dreams, and your hopes for the future. 2. Are there things I can do to improve my relationships? Yes, be confident in who you are, but also look for ways you can improve your relationships. Analyze your past relationships for mistakes you could have made. Were you too pushy? Were you a bit smothering? If possible, talk to a counselor or trusted friend and get their perspective. 3. Do you feel that this person is worth beginning a relationship with? Is this person someone you could see yourself with long-term? Write down some of the qualities you are looking for in a potential life-partner. Nobody is perfect, but do you see at least some of these qualities in this person? Remember, relationships may have their ups and downs, but there is nothing better than being with the love of your life. Don’t let your fear of another bad relationship hold you back!
